Well, there are a few theories on the mechanism of origin, but no one really knows for sure.
Some researchers believe it could be caused by the destruction of inhibitory neurons that regulate and filter sensory information. Another theory states that it could be a form of visual seizures not unlike epilepsy.
Since HPPD is a rare disorder, not many researchers spend time figuring out what causes it. Luckily, there has been an upsurge in research about LSD and other hallucinogens during this decade. Once we know more about how LSD creates its effects in the human brain, we may be in a position to discover how to treat HPPD.
That is one of the reasons this site came about.....To legitimize this disorder, so others know that it does exist.
